Having
a dry scalp is unpleasant. It is itchy and uncomfortable, and
scratching can lead to flaky dandruff and painful broken skin. If
you’re prone to dry scalp, take a look at your current routine to see
if you may be contributing to the problem of dry scalp.
Relaxants, colorants and perming chemicals can be harsh on the scalp
and hair. Frequent chemical treatments may be one contributing factor
to a dry scalp.
Consider
your hair care routine as well. Washing your hair too frequently or
using the wrong shampoo can cause dry scalp issues. Many of us are in
the habit of washing our hair on a daily basis, but some of us may only
require every other day. Try out a few different routines to see if
there’s a difference in your scalp condition.

You may also wish to look into your shampoo brand. Some brands are
specifically designed to clean effectively without stripping the hair
unnecessarily. While shampoos are meant to clean the scalp and hair
shaft of excess oil, they can actually be too effective and end up
robbing your scalp of vital moisture it needs. Check out a more
natural alternative to commercial shampoo and consider making your own unique blend.
Conditioner
is also important to the health and the look of your hair and your
scalp. It's a good idea to use a conditioner to replace the moisture
stripped by the shampoo. Hair conditioners provide moisture to the
scalp, and they are designed to smooth the hair cuticle thus minimizing
the appearance of damage and improving ability to both comb and style
the hair. Conditioners come in several varieties including
traditional, deep conditioner, protein conditioner and leave-in or
spray-in conditioner. Experiment to find one that works for you.
Apply to damp hair and comb through gently. If you are not using a
leave-in conditioner, allow an extra minute or two for the conditioner
to penetrate hair before rinsing out.
