Have
you ever read the ingredient list on your shampoo bottle? It's a long
and exhaustive list which includes things like propylene glycol which
is derived from natural gas, distearate, and methylparaben or
propylparaben. While the FDA approves the use of these ingredients in
many consumer products, some of them are of a questionable nature and
do spark controversy over safety.
Regardless,
we all know how beneficial it is to take a more natural approach with
our diet and our health so why not some of our other daily essentials
like shampoo? Shampoo is relatively simply to make yourself, and you
can even class it up with fancy essential oils of your own choosing!
|
You can make your own shampoo/soap base using lye, water, olive oil and
other optional ingredients such as essential oils, or you can buy a
premade base of Castile Soap. Castile soap is a versatile liquid
cleaner made from vegetable or olive oil rather than animal fat and
synthetic substances. It is gentle and can be used for shampoo,
laundry detergent, shaving and even dish washing liquid. Its natural
makeup means it's also environmentally friendly and has a reduced
environmental impact, so your shampoo will also be green.
Dr.
Bronner brand of castile soap is readily available and can be used as
is. It is available in several varieties including tea tree,
peppermint and eucalyptus. You may also use a premade castile soap and
make your own "gourmet" shampoo. Adding herbs and essential oils like
rosemary to stimulate the hair follicles and lavender to control oil
and reduce itchy scalp.
An
easy recipe calls for boiling 2 cups of distilled water and adding 3-4
tablespoons of your favorite herbs. Allow the mixture to sit and steep
for 30 to 40 minutes. Add 2 ounces of this herbal liquid to 4 ounces
of castile soap and shake well to incorporate. Add any essential oils
you like. Easy!
