Cover Girl Outlast
I've never been a big fan of lipstick in general. It leaves
marks on my drinking glass, makes kissing my favorite boy messy and a
little awkward, and requires time out of my busy life to monitor and
maintain. Plus, it may be that I
was never taught how to pick the right shade, but any hue other than my
lips' natural color has always felt, well, unnatural. Instead, I opted
for lip gloss or a lightly colored chap stick and said goodbye to
lipstick when I was 14. | On
the eve of my upcoming nuptials, however, I realized it was time to
test drive a few products to make sure my smile is picture perfect for
the wedding photographs. I went with Cover Girl Outlast, which
advertises all day (16-hour coverage). I chose Coral Silk number 568,
as I thought the light pink hue wouldn't be overpowering. As it turned
out, it was actually a shade or two lighter than my lips' natural
color, and it created more of a nude color with a slight shimmer. Nice,
but not exactly what I was after. I took a mental note to go for a
darker shade next time, and pressed on with my observations.
Cover Girl is one of the companies
marketing long-wearing lipsticks who break the lipstick into two
applications: color and topcoat. This usually encompasses two tubes,
but I wonder why they don't combine the two into one double-sided unit
that would be more convenient for travel? You're not supposed to have
to tote it along for reapplications during the day, but in
consideration for those traveling overnight, it would make sense to
have one less tube to pack.
The
color is applied first, and it must be given a minute to dry. It goes
on smooth, and then dries to a lightweight finish. It does feel
somewhat dry, but this is instantly relieved with the application of
the top coat. The top coat is a clear gloss that moisturizes the lips
without breaking down the color layer. I notice a tasty fruit flavor to
the gloss, a marked improvement from when I first tried the debut
product several years back. Once it's on, it's pretty much on to stay
until evening. The gloss of course wears away and requires additional
applications just like any gloss or chapstick, but given that you still
have a nice color base, it's a small price to pay.
Bottom (lip) Line:
Sorry for that bad pun. The bottom line is yes, this color does last through eating, drinking, even kissing.
Caveat:
Because the color layer goes on with
somewhat of a drying effect, you want to make sure you have
well-hydrated, exfoliated lips to begin with. If not, the color will
sink into any lip lines or adhere to loose skin and it will have a
rather unattractive appearance.
