How much is healthy weight gain during pregnancy?  Well, most experts recommend 20-35 pounds being a healthy, normal weight gain during pregnancy.  Many women actually find themselves gaining anywhere from 30-60 pounds during pregnancy and when the baby is delivered, they find it a struggle to lose those excess pounds.  So how do you avoid this pregnancy pitfall and ease the transition back into your pre-baby clothes?

One thing that is key to remember is when you are pregnant, you are not actually "eating for two" as the the famous saying goes.  Many of us make the assumption we need to increase out daily diet substantially in order to support the baby growing within.
While pregnancy is a special time meant to be enjoyed, and by no means should you be restricting calories excessively, some of us may have a tendency of seeing pregnancy as a free license to eat anything and everything, and the pounds multiply very quickly.  Since we're going to be growing in size and there's no need to worry about fitting into those tight jeans anymore, careful eating habits go out the window.  It's normal, but if you can get yourself out of that train of thought, you'll find yourself in much better shape post-baby.

Pregnancy does require a slight elevation in your daily caloric intake, but most experts recommend a maximum of 300 additional calories over what you would normally need to maintain a healthy weight.  What is absolutely key is getting the right nutrition.  You should be more concerned with increasing your consumption of healthy fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins to ensure your baby gets all the vital nutrients to support his or her development.

If you take precautions not to gain more weight than you actually need to, taking off your baby weight once your baby is born will be a breeze.  Between the delivery of the baby, amniotic fluids, and the placenta, post-birth you could lose about 10-12 pounds right off the bat.  If you choose to breastfeed, you'll burn extra calories and get back into shape even sooner.  Finally, as your body begins to normalize and swelling and water retention is alleviated, you'll lose even more.  Maintain a healthy diet, try to get in an afternoon walk with your baby every day, and you'll be back in shape in no time.
