The absolute honest truth is, it's not healthy to be overly obsessed with weight. Nobody wants to be tied to a scale every moment of their lives. No one should be burdened with the task of jumping on and off the scale every 5 minutes to see how many ounces were gained by eating that bowl of ice cream. None of us really want to have to worry about our weight. It would be great if we could all just eat perfectly for our body type, and for our body's specific energy needs. Then we would all be exactly the right size and none of us would ever have to worry about being overweight or what the exact number on the scale reads.

Unfortunately, there are times when either health, vanity or a combination of both recommend that the numbers on the scale need to be altered. In these cases, vigilance is key. No, weighing yourself every five minutes is not advised, but when you are watching your intake of food and exercising in an effort to lose weight, it is important to be astute and keep track of the numbers on the scale. The best bet is to weigh yourself every morning, before eating and after you've been to the bathroom.

Doing this on a daily basis will help you keep on track because you'll see the effects of your daily habits. If the scale goes up, you know that what you did yesterday as far as eating and exercise was not effective. When you see the needle go the opposite direction, you know you're doing the right things for your body, and you'll keep doing those things in order to achieve the desired effect.

Keep in mind that although the scale is an excellent barometer, it is not always completely accurate. When you work out and build muscle mass, muscle weighs more than fat on the scale, but it takes up less room on your body. You may be getting into better physical shape that doesn't exactly register on the scale. Weight on the scale can also be affected by things like water retention when you've had a day or two of high sodium intake. Keep these things in mind when you're monitoring your progress.

Once you have reached the weight that is healthy and feels good for you and your body, continue checking in on a daily basis, or at least every other day. The goal is not to become obsessive, but just to keep an eye on things. It's very easy to go back to unhealthy habits once you've found your way to a healthy goal, because the feeling is that you're finished and need no longer worry about your weight. In most cases, however, it's something that always needs to be maintained. If you notice the scale creep back up two or three pounds from your desired weight, you know it's time to "scale" back - say no to dessert for a couple of days or throw in an extra jog or two to stabilize. If you keep on top of things, weight will never have to become an issue.
