Calorie Burn                                                 Return to Health and Fitness
By LifeAdviceSite.com

To keep your body in an efficient state of higher calorie burn all day, you can employ a tactic called NEAT.  It stands for NonExercise Activity Thermogenesis.  To put it simply, it's all the little things you do throughout the day that add up to a lot of physical activity and a lot of extra calorie burn.  Keeping conscious of the little extra things you can do to be more active will enable your metabolism to operate at higher efficiency.  As these activities become a part of your routine, you will find you need to think about them less often and it will be natural to you.

Fidget

Remember that guy you sat next to in 10th grade Math?  He was always fidgeting, bouncing his knee, drumming on the desk and distracting everyone.  He may have had a case of ADD, or he may have had an active metabolism that created an extreme need for physical movement.  Even though lounging on the couch for one or two days a week feels great and recharges the body with needed rest, we are designed to move.  Constant stationary activity is not healthy.  So fidget, squirm and bounce in your chair.  Act like a six year old on a sugar high.  Your mom will probably still tell you to sit still, but just tell her you're busy burning calories.

Let the music move you
Put uplifting music on as much as you can and let it move you.  While you're cooking, cleaning, doing laundry or driving to the store.  Whenever you have great music on and you rock out or dance, you're not only improving your mood but burning extra calories too.  If you feel like it, sing out loud too - that will burn even more.  Just close the windows first.

Stand up, take a bow!
Did you know you burn more calories standing up than you do sitting down?  In fact, it can be as much as 40% more calories! Just the act of standing engages more muscle groups and ups the calorie burn.  So appreciate the time you have standing in line at the bank, and figure out more ways to incorporate more time on your feet.  Instead of surfing the net on the couch, haul the laptop to the kitchen counter and stand up for a while instead.  Rather than rocking the baby, try standing up and swaying gently.  Spend a few minutes reading your book standing up.  Stand up and stretch through every commercial break when you're watching TV.

Take the long way
Being a little less efficient in your travel throughout the day will allow your metabolism to become a little more efficient at burning calories for you.  Try to park at the end of the lot on purpose.  Take the stairs whenever you can.  If no one is in front of you on the escalator, pretend they're stairs and keep going.  Use the bathroom on another floor whenever nature calls.  Instead of always looking for the short-cut, try searching for the long way around and see how many extra steps you can throw in your day to sneak in a little extra movement.
