Key Four: The Perfect Runner's Corner
I don't know you as a person.  You might be one of the lucky ones who can run wherever and whenever no matter what is happening around you.  If so, I'm extremely jealous even though I'll try to be happy for you.

I am not one of those lucky few.  For me, running is a challenge I have to rise up to meet almost every time.  The slightest inconvenience, aggravation or distraction is often enough to pull me away from my goal.  Running down the street at rush hour with traffic whizzing by me is not exhilarating in my book.  In fact, it's distressing enough to send me home.  Knowing this about myself, I made sure to set myself up for success rather than failure.  I figured out what I needed early in the game - a fairly level surface preferably a circuit of open park or field .5 to 1 mile in length with little automobile or human traffic to distract me.

In this environment I can focus and be one with myself.  I don't have to worry about looking a fool to onlookers who would point and laugh at my efforts or mock my heaving breaths as I struggle to push through mile 4.

Or at least I can be alone with my own neurosis...

I need to be in an area where I can run freely without dodging people or dogs.  I like to run a respectable distance which I can duplicate by heading around once or twice more but remain close to my home base in the event of a cramp or fatigue.  I prefer level area as I am not a fan of hilly terrain.  Somehow, in all of the places I have lived I have always been able to find such an area
to suit my needs whether it be in a little frequented park, on a side street or in a pretty cemetery.

What works for you?  Do you need quiet to focus, or do you need people to distract you and take your mind off the challenge?  Find the key that allows you to be at your optimum level.

Figure it out before you take the final step to Key 5...
