How to Become a Runner: The Basics Key One
By A Lazy Couch Potato-Turned Reluctant Runner

Key One: Wardrobe
One of my most important essentials is wardrobe.  Whether you are overweight or not, we all have areas of our bodies that move, sway, jiggle or wiggle.  It’s normal and nothing to be ashamed or embarrassed about.

That being said, when you are trying to focus on building up your fitness regime, it is so much easier to do when everything is stationary.  You will feel more centered, you will be able to concentrate better and you will be more comfortable, enabling you to go further and work harder.  Take the time and make the investment to find clothing appropriate for your body.  If you need a great sports bra, find it!  If you need a supportive girdle underneath your running pants, so be it.  Do whatever you need to ensure you are comfortable and secure.  I find I am comfortable in stretchy leggings and a snug fitting cotton and polyester blend shirt.  Find what works for you.  It’s important to remember you want to reduce drag as much as possible, so a smoother, silkier fabric will allow your legs to move with less friction than loose sweat pants, for instance.

Any type of walking or running for exercise calls for a durable, comfortable athletic shoes.  I highly recommend if you have such an establishment nearby, to visit a store specializing in outfitting runners in the right shoe.  Often they will review your gait and any specific issues you have in order to fit you.  I would also suggest adding gel heel pads to provide further comfort for your feet.  Good shoes that will last you a long time and provide adequate support can run $100.00 or more, so prepare yourself and save up over a few weeks if you need to.

OK, time for Key 2.
