Lots
of people love Chinese Food. I'm certainly not immune and sometimes
fall prey to the rich, sweet scent of deep fried tasties and luscious
sauces. Yes, it's delicious but not always the most nutritious food
choice. When I feel an overwhelming craving coming on, I do whatever I
can to make Chinese Food healthier and affordable. I often choose a
grocery store brand over going to a restaurant. Not only is my Chinese
Food meal cheaper, but I end up getting only the amount I need rather
than tons of leftovers I have to keep eating over and over again.
In
addition, I can read the ingredient list on the packaging and make a
more informed decision. I've been eating Tai Pei for years and have
always loved their Chicken Fried Rice. Although it has a few
preservatives I wish it did not, it's so flavorful and filling my
craving is soon satisfied. Recently, I discovered a new Vegetable
Fried Rice version as well as Pork Egg Rolls which I couldn't wait to
try. The Vegetable Fried Rice offered a much shorter ingredient list
than the other varieties, and it was much lower it fat and calories. I
was wary it may be lacking in flavor, but I was willing to try it out
and save on calories. The Pork Egg Rolls were also not bad calorically
speaking, and they were made with a whole grain wrapper so I couldn't
resist - naturally!

I cooked
up the rice according to the microwave instructions and was pleased to
find it came out steaming and fluffy as always. The carrots, peas and
red pepper offered a nice burst of color within the soft nest of rice.
After steeling myself for bland steamed rice of little flavor, I was
pleasantly surprised to find it teeming with delicious, subtle flavor.
It wasn't exactly like the oyster sauce flavor I adore from the Chicken
Fried Rice variety, but it was delectable in its own right. Almost half
the calories with a respectable flavor to boot - instantly sold!

On
to the Egg Rolls. They promised to be crispy right out of the
microwave which I honestly couldn't fathom, but I reserved judgment
until first bite anyway. They were cooked according to the
instructions, and I have to admit the ends actually were somewhat
crispy. It wasn't the same as an Egg Roll fresh out of the kitchen,
but it was more than acceptable.
I hope
they keep making these tasty treats so I can always find them in my
local grocery store and satisfy my craving for Chinese when the mood
strikes. |
