Skippy Natural Peanut Butter                                 Return to Food Reviews

When I was little, my mother used to take me to the health food store where I would watch as a big machine slowly squeezed the life out of  fresh peanuts and turned them into peanut butter.  I also remember how I never liked to eat that dry peanut butter paste.  Twenty years later, I've come full circle and realized the health detriment that comes with many brands of peanut butter.  Of course, oil separation is a natural phenomena but somewhere along the line someone got the great idea to include  hydrogenated oil in an effort to eliminate this occurrence.  For years we've all been eating it happily until we realized how disgusting it actually proved to be.

I switched to natural peanut butter a long time ago and became saddened when I realized I had been consuming a miserable excuse for peanut butter for years.  It's not Mom's peanut butter, mind you.  Mine comes in a jar slightly smoother with just a little salt for flavor, but I've always found it to be a nice compromise.  Recently when I was stocking up and couldn't find my regular brand of natural PB, I came across Skippy Natural and decided to give it a try.

While the label touts there's "no need to stir" and I will concur there's no need, I still do every time I open the jar.  There's a little oil separation.  It's isn't a nightmare, but it's noticeable.  I love Skippy - who wouldn't love a smooth and creamy peanut butter to spread lovingly on a soft piece of bread?  My only 'but' comes from the fact that I had meant to get an all natural peanut butter - the kind that lists peanuts and salt as the only ingredients.  In my hurry, I did not note Skippy's addition of Palm Oil.  They did so to eliminate the unhealthy hydrogenated oil while still maintaining the smooth texture they are known for.  Good job on all fronts, definitely.  Still not what I was seeking, unfortunately.

It's very creamy, and it occurs to me they could probably get away with significantly less oil.  It's a great alternative but still only a memory of what peanut butter should be.  Perhaps they'll come out with a health nut version for us wackos some day.  Even if it requires stirring, I shall stir and be content!
