Frozen Pizza Every Night?                                   Back to Food and Nutrition
By LifeAdviceSite.com

Everyone loves pizza, right?  The soft, chewy crust, the melty, gooey cheese and the tangy sauce.  Delicious!  In our house we like to mix it up between chewy and crispy.  Crispy pizza is terrific, too.

If we had the time to run to our favorite pizza joint on a regular basis we certainly would, but it's much more convenient to eat at home so we often have frozen pizza from the freezer.  It's quick, costs less than a restaurant and it's convenient.

When we first started buying one particular brand, a large pie that fed 2-3 ran about $2.59 which was a great deal.  We love bargains!  A few months later the price had jumped to $2.79.  Noticeable, but still a good deal.  Several months later it hit $3.29 - ahem.  Several more months and the price was $3.59 which was no longer than much of a bargain.  A switch was made to individual sized pies.  At $1.25 or so they were acceptably priced and didn't taste bad, but the lack of cheese on every pie always required the addition of extra mozzarella cheese which was inconvenient at best.

And then it hit me.  Make my own pizza.  I found pre-made pizza dough in the market which was made with whole grain flour, and I had already invented a terrific recipe for tomato sauce loaded with tons of veggies no one even notices.  If I could make my own pizza and use my sauce, the pizza we ate guiltily once a week would become much more nutritious and no longer taboo!

I set to work immediately.  It was rough.  Pizza dough is stretchy and elastic, and it takes practice to work but I made it work.  Each pie had beautiful nutritious sauce and plenty of cheese under the pepperoni and on top.  And once they were cooked - it was like heaven in my house.  I felt like I was in a pizzeria but happily, it was my own kitchen.  Soft, chewy and stretchy cheese from the plate to the mouth!

And then the real test.  Would it stand up to freezing, or would it come out like cardboard like so many frozen pizzas that had gone before?  I found out several days later.  On the top rack they are chewy and amazing.  On the bottom rack they are crisp and delicious.  For a light, crispy crust I invested in a pizza stone for the oven (click image at right).  I was sold.  Homemade frozen pizza from now on!  I was so delighted I declared we could have pizza every night and it wouldn't even bother me.
